Frequently Asked Questions

Employers are increasingly seeking career-ready candidates that can demonstrate “soft skills” such as communication, career and self-development, critical thinking, leadership, professionalism, teamwork, technology and equity and inclusion. International internship programs are an ideal way to develop the skills employers value most. CEA internship abroad programs not only offer critical skill development, but expand beyond professional development to an international scale.
CEA internships abroad are offered in a variety of career fields and company profiles. Interns abroad will gain a global perspective with small-medium to large multinational companies in for profit, non-profit, startups, government agencies sectors. Career pathways focused in business, engineering, humanities, global health and social sciences, technology, communication, fine and studio arts, foreign language and literature, sciences, and social sciences can all be accommodated in an international internship.
CEA internships abroad opportunities can be found all over the world in Europe, Central and South America, Australia, and beyond! Internships abroad can be a standalone program or coupled with study abroad courses in both the summer and semesters. CEA international internship programs can offer a holistic experience of support services before, during and after the program ends including visa support, housing, academic courses, career development, and excursions.
International internships provide a competitive edge when entering into the workforce for either full employment post-graduation or to serve as a springboard to a higher level paid internship in the US. CEA international internships cultivate a global professional network and a global mindset which can be leveraged for future employment opportunities.
Depending on the entry requirements abroad, international internships abroad can be paid or unpaid. CEA internship abroad programs are often unpaid academic experiences where students complete an internship alongside an academic program. Academically-focused international internships take a holistic approach to the placement, often ensuring career development and projects directly related to the student’s broader career interests. Advantages of an unpaid CEA international internship abroad include academic credit, flexibility in scheduling and hours, competitive skill development and more.
Sourcing international internships alone can be challenging due to entry requirements and it can be advantageous to participate in an official international internship abroad program. Speak with the Career Services and Study Abroad Offices on campus to identify partner programs. Apply directly to the program and engage in the placement process to be matched with a CEA international internship abroad program.
All CEA Internships are credit-bearing. The variable credit design of our required International Internship course provides you with the flexibility to earn between 3-6 credits for the internship portion of your program. For the 3-credit internship option, you will take the required course and complete a minimum of 120 hours at your internship placement. For each additional 40 hours you choose to work at your internship placement, you may earn 1 additional credit. Earning additional credits is not required. If you participate in a summer program, please note you will be assessed a fee for each additional credit you choose to earn. The credits align to internship placement hours as follows:
  • 3 credits: minimum 120 placement hours + 22 internship course hours
  • 4 credits: minimum 160 placement hours + 22 internship course hours
  • 5 credits: minimum 200 placement hours + 22 internship course hours
  • 6 credits: minimum 240 placement hours + 22 internship course hours
You will identify the credit option that works best for you during the placement process. We strongly recommended that you apply as soon as possible.
