About the Program
The Study + Internship program in Tokyo is designed for students who are aspiring professionals that want to distinguish themselves in an evolving global job market. The program allows you to make progress toward your academic degree and remain on track for graduation, while developing the top skills employers want you to gain by the time you enter the job market. During the program, you will intern at a local host organization while also taking our mandatory Global Internship Course and additional courses. Our diverse range of courses will provide you with a platform to excel academically, and your personalized internship placement will help you acquire professional experience from a global perspective and learn from professionals in an international context. Program options are dependent upon location, but may include: Semester, Summer, Part-Time and Full-Time Internships, and English and host language speaking placements. Students enrolled in an institution in Canada or Mexico are eligible if the home institution accepts a US transcript and credits.
Students must have completed at least 1 year of full-time undergraduate coursework, at the time of application.
Students must be enrolled as an undergraduate degree-seeking student for the entire duration of the program.
Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at their home institution.
Some courses may have prerequisites.
Students must be at least 18 years of age by start of program.

The CEA CAPA Tokyo Center, soon to be located in the heart of Tokyo, places you in one of the city’s most energetic and well‑connected areas. Known for its blend of business, culture, and technology, this area offers convenient access to major transportation hubs, commercial centers, and the everyday life of Tokyo. From lively streets and quiet side alleys to shops, cafés, and cultural sites, you’ll have countless opportunities to explore the city between and beyond your classes.
The Tokyo Study Center will offer courses in engineering, business, and computer science, reflecting Tokyo’s role as a global leader in innovation and industry. Courses in the humanities will complement these academic areas, allowing students to gain insight into Japanese culture, history, and society while building a well‑rounded academic experience. Many classes will use Tokyo as an extended classroom, incorporating site visits, guest speakers, and local case studies to help you connect what you learn to the world around you.
A dedicated onsite team will provide support throughout your time in Japan, helping you navigate your academic goals while offering activities and guidance that introduce you to life in Tokyo. Whether you’re looking for academic assistance, local recommendations, or cultural programming, the team will be there to help you make the most of your experience.

Accreditation
Courses taught at the CEA CAPA Tokyo Center have been designed in conjunction with, and approved by, the University of New Haven (UNH). In addition, faculty appointments have been approved by UNH. After the successful completion of a session at the CEA CAPA Tokyo Center, you will receive credit for your work from UNH. Located in Connecticut, the University of New Haven is a student-focused, comprehensive university that’s fully accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The agreement between CEA CAPA and UNH follows the highest standards of good practice in education abroad and satisfies the rigorous requirements of the University's institutional accreditor, making credits earned at the CEA CAPA Tokyo Center easily transferable to US-accredited institutions. Grading
Professors at the CEA CAPA Tokyo Center carefully evaluate students' work and progress throughout their academic session. When calculating final grades, instructors consider written and oral exercises, homework assignments, attendance, classroom participation, and exam performance.
The following grading scale is in use for CEA CAPA center-delivered syllabi:

Classroom and Information
- Attendance will be required 4-5 days per week, and you will be expected to prioritize your courses over any personal travel.
- Faculty may come from a variety of cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds.
- Periodic exams, homework assignments, and final exams will be administered.
- Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each instructor.
- You’ll attend class with other CEA CAPA students.
- Teaching styles may differ from those in the U.S. Be prepared to adapt to new classroom structures and coursework expectations.

Program Structure & Courses
For your CEA CAPA Internship program, you will simultaneously intern at your host organization, and take our mandatory Global Internship Course. Your internship work schedule will be established once you arrive, and may vary depending on your career field and host organization.
Internship Placement Duration and Hours:
You will intern at your host organization for 8-weeks and complete 20 hours per week (160 hours total). You will likely intern during standard business hours Mondays-Fridays and your placement may include in-person, remote, and hybrid work depending on the needs of your host organization.
Global Internship Course:
You will take the Global Internship Course alongside your internship placement. This professional development course is designed to accompany your placement so you can make the most of your internship abroad. You will learn how to understand and articulate the value of your internship through the lens of the top Career Readiness Competencies that employers crave, which will help you stand out to future employers and graduate schools. You will also engage in live cultural discussions that will enhance your global perspective and intercultural awareness between your program location and the U.S. The course comprises of reading, writing, and verbal assignments, including building an e-portfolio, completing mock interviews, developing your online professional presence, giving a final presentation, conducting industry field research work, and more. You can also take advantage of additional CEA CAPA mentoring and career preparation workshops to complement what you learn in the course.
Credit Options:
You will receive academic credit for your internship abroad via the Global Internship Course and your performance at your internship placement. You will enroll in the course for 3 credits and complete 20 hours per week at your internship placement.
Additional Elective Courses:
In addition to taking the Global Internship Course and completing your internship placement, you will choose 1 additional CEA CAPA course to take from the catalog of course options available to you. By taking an elective course to complement the internship portion of your program, you will be able to make progress toward your degree and graduation requirements, maximize your learning, and gain a richer cultural experience while you are abroad.
Each elective course typically meets for 45 contact hours/3 credits, some courses may meet for 60 contact hours/4 credits. Attendance will be required 4-5 days per week, and you will be expected to prioritize your courses over any personal travel. You may earn a total of 6-7 credits during your program.
Industry-Certified Career Coaching & Internship Placement Process
Once you’ve submitted your application and required documents for your internship program, your career development adventure will begin! You will be assigned your very own Industry-Certified Career Development & Internship Specialist, who will work with you one-on-one throughout pre-departure to guide you through the steps and deadlines of our Internship Placement Process. Your Specialist will be your main point of contact for your internship prior to your departure. They will be happy to answer any questions you might have, and will also provide you with personalized career coaching, as needed, so you are set up for success for your internship abroad.
In addition to working with your Career Development & Internship Specialist, during the Internship Placement Process you will engage with your In-Country International Internship Coordinator in your location and your potential host site supervisor. Your International Internship Coordinator will draw from your application materials to source and match you with a personalized internship placement that best aligns with your unique experience, skills, career interests, and goals for your internship abroad. Please also note, your host site supervisor will retain the final decision on the finalization of your placement, so it’s important to approach your interview with your host site supervisor with maturity, adaptability, curiosity, and commitment to both your career interests and the host organization.

Your housing abroad is more than a place to sleep, it's a place to feel at home.
Health & Safety
Health and safety are a top priority when selecting and reviewing program housing. When evaluating housing, CEA CAPA considers several factors including the surrounding location, commute time to academic or internship settings, as well as the condition of the building exterior and interior, common areas, the individual housing unit, and other living spaces. CEA CAPA works to ensure that program housing meets established minimum health and safety guidelines and aligns with best practices in the field.
Cleaning Services
Regular cleaning of communal areas for programs longer than 4 weeks.
Wi-Fi
Reliable internet access is included in every housing option we offer.
Students Per Bedroom
Typically 1–2 students per bedroom, with a maximum of 3 per room.
Commute Time
Housing is located within 60 minutes of campus by foot or transportation.
Temperature Control
Cooling and heating appliances are provided (AC not always included).
Kitchen Access
A shared space with basic utensils, refrigerator, freezer, and a stove, oven, or microwave.
Laundry
Access to laundry is guaranteed onsite or within walking distance. Drying racks included.

Excursions
Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You'll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we've offered in the past.
