Program Structure & Courses

You'll enroll in a weekly academic seminar and an internship placement; and one additional elective course. The internship seminar meets for 30 contact hours and requires between 120-160 hours at your internship placement over 8 weeks. Together, your seminar and internship placement are worth 4 credits. Tier 4 UK Immigration policy dictates your placement hours.  Actual weekly placement hours may vary depending on industry standards for your career field and will be determined after you arrive.

Students enrolled in the two-course option may earn up to 7 credits. Electives meet for 45 hours and run for 6 weeks. Courses meet at various times Monday-Friday; active learning components required by your seminar or elective courses may be scheduled for Fridays. Your course options may be limited, as your primary responsibility is to fulfill your internship obligations, which includes honoring your employer’s preferred schedule.

We strongly recommended that you apply as soon as possible. Internship positions are selective; students who demonstrate both professionalism and commitment throughout the process are most successful in securing placements.

The placement process involves three Skype or phone interviews: 1) a screening interview with your CEA site specialist; 2) a job placement interview with your on-site internship coordinator and; 3) a final interview with your host site supervisor. The host site retains the final decision regarding placements, so it’s important to convey your independence, maturity, adaptability, curiosity, and commitment to both your career interests and the host organization. During the placement process, you will also be guided through the Tier 4 student visa process.

Upon successfully completing your on-site placement coordinator interview, CEA guarantees you a placement based on the personal, professional, and cross-cultural goals agreed upon in your interview. All placements will be secured two weeks prior to arrival.

Upon placement, we'll automatically enroll you in the weekly internship course. You will be asked to indicate your preferred elective. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines. Your primary responsibility during your internship program is to fulfill your internship and academic obligations, which includes honoring your employer’s preferred schedule and fulfilling your commitments.

If you have confirmed an internship placement in London through independent contacts, we can also support you in securing important logistics such as visas, housing, and credit. Contact a CEA admissions counselor for more details.
