You will enroll in a two-part internship seminar course that includes an academic seminar and an internship placement. This two-part internship seminar may be worth either 3 or 6 credits.
The 3 credit part-time internship option includes a seminar that meets for 22 contact hours and a minimum of 120 hours at your internship placement throughout the semester. In addition, you will select 3 elective courses from our study center course options.
The 6 credit part-time internship option includes a seminar that meets for 32 contact hours and a minimum of 200 hours at your internship placement throughout the semester. In addition, you will select 2 elective courses from our study center course options.
Elective courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits. Overall, semester students may earn 12 credits (277 contact hours) and academic year students may earn a total of 24 credits. Students may petition to take one additional 3 credit/ 45 hour course if needed for a total of 15 credits/ 322 contact hours. Given the demands of the internship, 12 credits is recommended.
Elective courses generally meet 2 times per week, Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays. Your internship seminar meets weekly. Your internship placement hours may take place Monday-Friday; the exact time of day and days of the week will be determined after you arrive.
We strongly recommended that you apply as soon as possible. Internship positions are selective; students who demonstrate both professionalism and commitment throughout the process are most successful in securing placements. Language proficiency is not a requirement for all placements in Barcelona, but there will be certain placements that may require some level of Spanish proficiency.
The internship placement process involves three video interviews: a screening interview with your Internship Coach, a job placement interview with your study center placement coordinator, and a final interview with your host site supervisor. The host site retains the final decision regarding placements, so it’s important that your interviews reflect your maturity, adaptability, curiosity, and commitment to both your career interests and the host organization. Upon successfully completing your study center placement coordinator interview, CEA guarantees you a placement based on the personal, professional, and cross-cultural goals reflected in your interview. All placements will be secured two weeks prior to arrival.
Upon placement, you’ll automatically be enrolled in your internship course. Prior to departure, you will be asked to also select your preferred elective courses and, if you plan to take a language course, you will be asked to take an online language placement exam. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. If you choose to take a language course, to ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Spain. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
The host institution has offered the following courses in the past. Please note that course listings may not be finalized until the start of the term; we’ll post an updated list when the host institution finalizes its offerings.
