DESCRIPTION

This course is intended as an introductory survey of artistic practices in Europe and America from the late nineteenth century to the present day. As a major industrial and cultural center in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, London is an ideal ground to study the origins of modern art and design. The rich national collections based in London will enable students to study avant-garde art in the post-war period as well as subsequent developments in contemporary art.

The course is organized chronologically in order to comprehensively illustrate the progression of ideas, influences, values, aims, methods, and outputs that radically changed the concept of and taste for art in the Western society of the past century.

Students gain an understanding of how socio-economic changes and political events impact visual culture and will learn to identify specific contexts for art-works and personalities. Furthermore students will investigate the materials and techniques available to artists in the 1900s and in the present day as well as exhibition strategies and the current international art market.

Lectures and class discussions are complemented by visits to the many museums and galleries available in London, such as the Tate Britain and Tate Modern and the Courtauld Institute. Students are encouraged to visit commercial galleries.
