Like the families of students studying abroad, the safety, wellbeing, and academic success of students are CEA’s highest priorities. We understand that many families may be unfamiliar with experiences abroad and may have feelings of concern. Knowing that, we provide timely answers to common questions through our exclusive webinar series, via videos we post on Facebook, in our family blog, and throughout Studying Abroad with CEA: A Family Guide, an excellent overview to the CEA experience that covers everything from student confidentiality to health & safety protocols to budgeting to careers.
To help families know what to expect, we have a CEA Family Resources page, which explains how to access Family Facebook groups for different locations and includes links to upcoming and past webinars, which can be streamed and are also transcribed in Question and Answer form. We are proactive with communication and have found that informing families helps reduce concerns and better assist their students. CEA has developed these family resources as a leader in the study abroad field and has presented them as best practices at conferences such as NAFSA.
CEA respects the privacy of students who are of legal age when they sign the CEA Program Participant Agreement. Therefore, except in rare cases, information concerning a student’s housing, behavior, academic standing, health condition, and program location must be disseminated by the student. While maintaining confidentiality, we do maintain a CEA Family Resources web page, where parents can learn more about the normal phrases of study abroad most students experience.
As students begin preparing to go abroad, families may find it difficult to balance helping their students and allowing them take the initiative to accomplish necessary tasks. During this time of planning, CEA Site Specialists provide expert advice so that students can pro−actively maneuver the pre−departure process, gain confidence, and understand what they need to be successful abroad.
As the first days abroad are busy with settling into housing, meeting new people, immersing into a new culture in a new environment, and even adjusting to a new language, CEA helps families play a supportive and patient role during this transitional time. We have two emergency phones available 24/7, one for on-site students and another for families.
When students return home, many experience a bit of what’s known as “reverse” culture shock or re−entry shock. Knowing this, CEA works with families to understand these completely normal feelings and behaviors and how the transition can be eased.
CEA is grateful for the trust families extend to us as we work together to ensure a positive, rewarding experience. We understand that students, even though they are legal adults, are also children with concerned families invested in their student’s education, safety, and wellness, critical areas for student success.
A CEA Internship is a part-time, credit-bearing, unpaid, pre-professional opportunity to bridge the skills gap and elevate the student experience to a level that sets students apart from peers. All internships include 120+ hours on-site and a 22-hour/3-credit seminar (30-hour/4-credit seminar in London).
CEA has two internship models, which provide flexible options for students that fit their various academic and financial needs:
To help students, universities, and families better understand what to look for and which questions to ask when considering an internship abroad, CEA will be offering a three-part online seminar series called “Navigating the Maze of International Internships,” with each webinar posing a critical question. Here’s a brief overview:
Webinar #1 Program Model Assessment
Does a program offer a high-quality internship opportunity, one that aligns with best practices and offers a strong framework? This first seminar will cover best practices in the field and provide critical components to examine when evaluating options to ensure alignment of program design to educational and professional outcomes.
Webinar #2: Program Provider Assessment
Does a program provider offer the right resources and tools to place students in meaningful internships abroad? This second seminar will cover the qualities of an internship program provider or educational partner. It will outline the characteristics to evaluate when assessing the quality of program delivery, provide an overview of different program models, explore characteristics of quality program providers, discuss placement methodology, and cover the importance of pre-departure and on-site student support.
Webinar #3: Student Readiness Assessment
Is a student ready for the challenges that come with an international internship? This final seminar will cover the characteristics of successful interns and define key intern qualities that lead to meaningful, productive pre-employment experiences.
So, be on the lookout for an invitation to join the CEA Internship Webinar Series, which will be coming soon! From increased self-confidence and greater employability to cross- cultural communication skills and a stand-out résumé, CEA internships offer students many benefits. Because internships abroad maximize students’ overseas experiences, CEA is committed to expanding our internship portfolio around the world and helping students rise above in a crowded job market.
CEA was wonderful to work with…Their support and knowledge was constant through the planning and execution.
