My favorite class while abroad was Writing in the City - Sydney. While I am a very science- and math-oriented student, this writing course pushed me to do something unfamiliar and introduced me to a subject I once thought I disliked. Being able to explore different writing techniques and exercise my creative side was something I enjoyed a lot. As a class, we would take trips to various areas of Sydney, my favorite being the nature walk, and discussed ways to incorporate figurative language into our pieces, how to develop our writing further, and how to begin and continue a story when stumped. This course allowed me to have creative freedom that I do not get in the courses I am enrolled in at my home institution which made me enjoy it a lot more.
While abroad, I engaged with the local community through trying various coffee shops and restaurants. As someone who loves coffee, I made it a mission to try as many coffee shops as I could. While ordering I often had conversations with the workers about where I was from and their recommendations on various activities around the city. I also interacted with workers from various museums and monuments. Getting to learn about the history and why their work was important to them gave me insight on the values an Australian may hold.
