My favorite class abroad was Madrid Museums. I don't get to take any art classes at school since they don't align with my major, so being able to take one abroad was extremely informational and exciting. Our class got to visit five different museums in the city and we got to see the paintings we were studying in person, which built upon my understanding and was at sometimes surreal. I liked the class a lot because I got to learn about art but also got to learn about the history of Spain and Madrid while doing so.
One thing I did abroad to try and engage with the local community is through volunteer work. CEA offered everyone on our program an opportunity to do community service volunteer work and through this I volunteered at a Madrid food bank. Doing this allowed me to give back to the city that I spent my time in while abroad. Working at the food bank was an extremely gratifying experience, and allowed me to connect more with the community. Also, as a non Spanish speaker, I believe that if I volunteered at the food bank more frequently than I did I would have improved my Spanish speaking by a ton.
