My internship with Heath School - Pupil Referral Unit was certainly the best part of my academic experience abroad. I would go three times a week from 8:30am-4:30pm, and during this time, I learned so much about the UK school system and how organizations support students who have certain behavioral concerns. More often than not, I found myself participating in Active Learning trips with the students--which were basically like field trips around the city. During that time, I tried archery, bowling, ice skating, virtual reality zombie apocalypse games, underground escape rooms, immersive museums, etc. It was incredible, and if you can't tell, this was certainly my favorite part about my internship because it allowed me to see so many different parts of the city! I also had the opportunity to work closely with a speech therapist at the school, which was important for me as I study speech-pathology at my home university. I was able to observe her evaluations and assist her in overseeing communication behaviors within the classroom.
I had the opportunity to do an internship in London with a pupil-referral unit. This gave me plenty of opportunities to engage with locals, as the staff that I worked with lived in the surrounding area! Sometimes, I would travel home on the tube with my coworkers, and we would also grab a quick pint after work (which was very on-brand for workers in London). I would also engage with locals at my favorite coffee shops and bakeries around my neighborhood!
