I took only one class abroad, Business Management in Japanese Corporations. Overall, I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot about Japanese culture and how connected it is to Japanese business practices. I find the formality of Japanese business very interesting and something I would think about when looking at American businesses. I also got to go on field trips where we went to the business district of Japan to see Japanese businesses first hand. The last thing I enjoyed was a mock negotiation we did in class where we practiced what we learned through negotiations with each other. Overall, this class get me interested and the activities in the class were quite fun.
During my time abroad my engagement with the local community came in all sorts of different ways. I actively engaged with Japanese students from the campus I was staying on. I learned a lot about their interests and what they life. They really enjoy American sitcoms like how Americans like anime. Another way I interacted was through my interest in martial arts. I do Taekwondo so every now and then I would find a park to practice. An elderly woman came up to me interested in it, and she said she really enjoyed watching me. I went to Kyoto for a little bit where I walked by a martial arts school, and a lady came up to me saying if I wanted to watch practices I could. I got to watch locals practice katana, and naginata martial arts which was super cool to do.
