I would say that my favorite class abroad was Food & Culture in Italy. I am a foodie and love trying new foods / dishes, and our class had the opportunity of visiting local supermarkets, wineries, and bakeries while indulging ourselves in Italian cuisine. I also enjoyed learning about the different origins of Italian dishes and ingredients (such as where olive oil and pasta were introduced!). Taking this class and going on these trips furthered my understanding and appreciation about how food is tremendously apart of Italian culture.

While I was abroad in Florence, I connected with the local community in a variety of ways. I would go to local coffee shops and restaurants, as well as markets filled with food, vintage apparel, and accessories. There was one pizzeria that I went to in my neighborhood regularly, where I became friends with the owner. From dining there several times, he got to know me and what my go-to order was, which made me feel appreciative and recognized. It was these moments and experiences throughout my time in Florence that made me feel connected to the city in a deeper way, beyond the perspective of a tourist.
