My favorite class was called Monarchy – The Royal History of London. I loved this class because the professor was very responsive to the students’ needs while also encouraging my pre-existing interest in the Royal Family. My mom and I would watch The Crown together, so I already had a basic understanding of the Royal Family’s history. However, having the opportunity to dive deeper into their history and learn more about the monarchy from an academic perspective was an amazing experience. It was especially exciting to be learning about the history while actually living in London and being surrounded by many of the places and landmarks we discussed in class.
I was able to engage with the local community while abroad through my classes on campus. A lot of my dorm life centered around other students who were also from the United States, so I had to make a conscious effort to step outside of that comfort zone and get to know other students in my courses. I would ask them questions about their lives, where they were from, and places they would want to visit if given the opportunity. These conversations helped me connect with people from different backgrounds and gain a better understanding of the local community and culture.
