Madrid is simply the easiest city to engage in because of how kind, friendly, and social people are. One thing I did while I was abroad was volunteering with CEA CAPA, and that itself showed how the Community of Madrid cares for those that need it. We were at a food bank, and seeing how they make meals for the week, organized about it, and had a great system where they met the community where they were which allowed retention. It was a great opportunity to see and allowed me to see how I can engage in my community in the states. On the social end, I was familiar with my neighborhood food store, convenience stores, nail salons, restaurants, and more. Creating a bubble easily accessible for my needs and helping my 4 months feel like being at home. Lastly, holding conversations, practicing Spanish, and learning new things about a city I was unfamiliar with was a blast that I will forever hold close to my heart!
I had great classes while abroad and each was unique and eventful. However, my Food and Culture class was one of my favorites. As a foodie, it was so fun to eat, understand the culture, and learn the history behind food in Spain. We took many field trips and got to explore our palates while learning. Learning through experience is my favorite way to learn, so this was the perfect way for me to do that.
