My favorite rotation during my internship was in internal medicine. While all the doctors I had the opportunity to shadow were incredibly kind and welcoming, the doctors I met in internal medicine took it upon themselves to invite my shadowing partner and me for coffee every morning to review the cases we would be observing that day. We had so many amazing opportunities to ask questions and learn from their expertise. I felt like a genuine employee of the hospital despite my limited capacity to participate. We were all over the hospital, and the doctors took their time making sure we understood everything they would do throughout the day.
Not only did we have the opportunity to engage with the local community through exploring the city, but we were also able to interact firsthand with local healthcare workers while we observed their everyday work. Although we weren't able to interact with the patients firsthand (to respect their privacy), we observed the interactions between the doctors and their patients. Watching the local doctors interact with their patients and colleagues helped us better understand the local culture.
