DESCRIPTION

This course aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of politics, political science, and political philosophy. Starting our analysis in the thinkers of the ancient world, moving through the Renaissance and Enlightenment, and into the modern era, students will confront some of life?s most testing questions on; liberty, justice, and morality in the pursuit of building a fairer and more representative society. More practically, students will learn about political regimes, party politics, electoral systems, the impact of media on politics, and the growth of social movements in the 21st century.

Though the foundation of the course will be in European political thinking, the course will also challenge Euro-centrist perspectives on statecraft and social structures by examining the political histories and current realities of several other nation-states, including; the PRC, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Botswana, South Africa, Nigeria, Brazil and Venezuela, among others. In applying these cases students will gain a broader world-view of politics both practically and theoretically.

Issues of the state, nation, government, sovereignty, power, society, ethics, morality, and justice will all be central to our analysis.
