Excursions

Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You'll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we've offered in the past.

Studying abroad in Costa Rica is a life changing event for many students. When you study abroad in San José, you experience learning outside the traditional classroom setting, gain international insight, and expand your sense of cultural awareness. Considering this small country contains 5% of the world’s biodiversity and acts as a pioneer in sustainability efforts, it’s an ideal destination to study environmental sciences.
San José is the most expensive city in Costa Rica. While it’s typically cheaper than other U.S. capital cities, it’s pricier than places in South America like Buenos Aires and Valparaiso.
San José is known as a peaceful place, but petty theft in popular tourist areas and on public transportation is common. Costa Rica is considered the safest country in Latin America with low violent crime rates, so it’s generally a safe city for study abroad students.

CEA CAPA offers courses in environmental science, sustainability, Latin American studies, Spanish language, business, and health sciences. Classes are held at Universidad Veritas.
Yes. Many courses are taught in English, especially in business, health, and environmental studies. Spanish-language classes are also available at all proficiency levels.
Yes. Credit transfer depends on each student’s home university and its academic policies. Students are responsible for confirming credit approval with their home institution before studying abroad, as transferability is determined by the home university, not by CEA CAPA. 

Housing & Daily Life

Students typically live with local host families (homestays) or in shared apartments located near campus.
Yes. All CEA CAPA San Jose housing options include WiFi and access to a washing machine. Dryers are not common abroad, so students should plan to hang dry their clothes, which is the standard practice in Costa Rica.
Most students take public buses, walk, or use ride-share apps. CEA CAPA helps students learn the local transit routes during orientation.

Language & Culture

No, but learning Spanish will greatly enhance your experience. Many locals speak limited English, especially outside tourist areas.
Costa Rican culture is friendly and community-oriented. Expect a relaxed pace of life, strong family values, and an emphasis on nature and sustainability.

Travel & Exploration

Students often travel to beaches, volcanoes, cloud forests, or national parks like Manuel Antonio and Arenal. Costa Rica is a small country and easy to explore.
Excursions may include guided trips to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, coffee farms, volcano hikes, or Pacific coast beaches.
San José has a tropical climate with a dry season (Dec–April) and rainy season (May–Nov). Expect warm days, cooler evenings, and daily showers during the rainy months.

Budget & Affordability

Yes. Costa Rica is more affordable than many U.S. cities. Meals, transportation, and entertainment are budget-friendly, especially in homestays.
Yes, students living in apartments are responsible for their own meals. Those in homestays typically receive two meals per day as part of their program.
No. U.S. students cannot work while studying in Costa Rica due to visa restrictions.

Health, Safety & Support

Yes, with normal precautions. CEA CAPA provides safety guidance and 24/7 emergency support. Students are advised to avoid isolated areas after dark.
CEA CAPA provides on-site staff support, local orientation, health resources, and ongoing wellness check-ins during your program.
CEA CAPA assists students in accessing English-speaking doctors while abroad. International insurance, included in the program, covers most routine and urgent medical care.
Yes. Tap water in San José is generally safe to drink, but students with sensitive stomachs may prefer bottled or filtered water during the first few days.

Application, Visas & Logistics

No visa is required for studying in Costa Rica. Students will enter as tourists and are granted a stay of up to 180 days. CEA CAPA provides instructions and support for Costa Rican student entry requirements.
Students are encouraged to apply 6–9 months in advance to secure placement and allow sufficient time for housing arrangements and visa processing if applicable.
Students must provide a valid passport, program acceptance letter, and proof of insurance when preparing for a study abroad program. CEA CAPA provides a checklist to help students stay organized throughout the process.
