I completed an internship that was fantastic in countless ways, but I'd like to highlight the one class I did take: Art from Down Under. The professor was so knowledgeable and eager to get to know all her students as individuals, the workload was super manageable but still substantial enough that I felt I got a real grasp of the depth and breadth of visual arts Sydney has to offer. One aspect I particularly enjoyed is that we went on field trips to explore different museums/street art for about half of our class sessions, so this is definitely a hands-on course.
Engaging with the local community in Sydney was a lot easier than I imagined once I got a hold of what the city had to offer and which events most frequently happened during summer (the season I studied abroad). On one hand, there were plenty of free beach bonding events and boat sightseeing tours catered to the international community, and, through attending those events, I got to learn a lot more about the cultures that make up the city, particularly Aboriginal and Southeast Asian cultures. On the other hand, I was lucky enough to be in Sydney during both Ramadan and food festival season, so I had an absolute blast talking to Sydneysiders with the same background as me in the Lakemba Ramadan street markets.
