HOW DID YOU ENGAGE WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WHILE ABROAD?
While abroad, I made a conscious effort to engage with the local community by immersing myself in everyday life. I spent a lot of time exploring local neighborhoods, visiting cafes, shops, and markets where I could interact with residents and learn about their customs and lifestyles. I also enjoyed attending local events and festivals, which gave me a deeper understanding of the culture and traditions. In addition, I made an effort to speak with local vendors and artisans, learning about their craft and personal stories. This approach allowed me to form connections with people on a more personal level and experience the culture in a more authentic way, rather than as just a visitor. Through these interactions, I gained a greater appreciation for the local way of life and felt more connected to the community.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CLASS WHILE ABROAD, AND WHY?
My favorite class while abroad was Introduction to Photojournalism. This class stood out because it gave me the opportunity to blend my passion for photography with the powerful storytelling aspect of journalism. Through this course, I learned the technical skills of capturing compelling images and how to communicate stories visually, which felt especially significant in a foreign environment. The class included fieldwork, where I was encouraged to explore the local culture, interact with people, and document their lives through my camera lens. I found it incredibly rewarding to share stories that highlighted the daily realities and hidden beauty of the community I was living in. The feedback and mentorship I received from the professor and peers pushed me to improve my technical skills and to develop a deeper understanding of the ethical responsibilities photojournalists hold. Ultimately, this class not only enhanced my photography but also deepened my appreciation for the power of visual storytelling in shaping perceptions and sparking conversations.
