I loved my cross cultural management class! We learned all about the cultural dimensions of different countries and companies, and for someone like me who is planning on working in HR and management after graduation, this class was super applicable. Beyond career goals however, this class helped me become a lot more aware of my culture and this awareness increased my cultural competence.
This is one thing that I wish I had done more of. The Czech people are famously not very outwardly friendly, so it took more effort to engage with locals. However, I really enjoyed getting to know the owner of the corner store that was right under my apartment building, and talking with the barista of my favorite coffee shop. I did some less direct engagement with the local community by participating in cultural events like going to Christmas markets and celebrating the November 17th day of Freedom and Democracy commemorating the Velvet Revolution.
