WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CLASS WHILE ABROAD, AND WHY?

My favorite hospital rotation during my internship was either OB/GYN or anesthesiology. Both of these rotations put me into the operating rooms and I got to see some of the coolest surgeries and procedures! In OB/GYN, I saw several C-sections, which was such a special experience to witness a new baby coming into the world. In anesthesiology, we got to see all kinds of surgeries--orthopedic, urology, pediatric, and so many others. It was amazing to see some of the differences between the Polish and American healthcare systems and learn about medicine in a new culture. These also really reminded me of the importance of humanity in medicine. As an observer, many of these experiences are "wow, that's so cool!" but these are real and scary days for these patients and their families.

HOW DID YOU ENGAGE WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WHILE ABROAD?

I made an effort to go to smaller, family-run shops and restaurants to experience more authentic Polish food that was away from the super touristy parts of Kraków. I found that the best restaurants are the ones that don't have any English on the menu (shoutout Google translate)! I also learned how welcoming the Polish community is--if you put in just a little effort to speak Polish or interact with them in their native culture/language, they are so kind and accommodating.
