How to Make the Most of Your Time Studying Abroad While on a Budget

Before I came to Aix-en-Provence, I had a set budget and knew I would not be able to spend as much as I was hoping to and be careful with what purchases I was making. I knew I wouldn't be able to travel to different cities and countries every weekend, so I have been finding fun activities to do in Aix that have helped me stay on budget while also having a great study abroad experience.

The markets in Aix are a place to find cheap clothes, fresh food, and other inexpensive but cute souvenirs. I typically buy fruits and vegetables for the week from the markets for a low cost. Window shopping around the markets is always a fun activity as well. I enjoy walking through to look at the clothes and other goods.

Another way to shop more cheaply in Aix is during the Grande Braderie. This is a huge week of sales, and you can find stores putting out racks of shoes and clothes on the streets, selling clearance-priced items.

Other than shopping, I have enjoyed spending afternoons at the art museums. The tickets are very cheap and sometimes it is free to visit. I also have been making a lot of art as well. On a sunny day I will sit at a nearby cafe and draw, or go to the park to draw.

People watching is always a very French and fun activity. My friends and I often go for a small drink or snack outside to talk and people watch. It is a great way to get outside and socialize without having to spend a lot of money.

In addition, I go on lots of walks and occasionally run in the nearby parks. Aix has two large parks perfect for walking, but it also has a large sports complex with soccer fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts that the public can use for free.

One thing that came as a surprise to me is that bus tickets to the nearby towns in the South of France are very cheap and it is easy to travel to them. I plan on taking many afternoon trips to Marseille, Cassis, and other coastal towns to go for a swim or hike along the coast.

Lastly, simply exploring Aix is always a great way to discover the gems of the city and not have to spend money. I go on lots of walks through the city just to explore narrow streets and window shop at stores I haven't seen before.
