The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona hosts 50,000 students—3,000 of them international—across its multiple urban campuses. The university’s strong local connections allow students to gain practical experience as they explore Spanish culture.
Located on the Plaza Catalunya in the heart of the city, the CEA Barcelona Center offers courses in a range of subjects, taught in English and Spanish. Learning takes place both in and out of the classroom, with instructors taking full advantage of Barcelona’s many notable sites and attractions.
When you study abroad in Barcelona, you can choose CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.
Program Structure
You'll enroll in 1 CEA core course, 1-3 CEA courses and 1-2 courses from either Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) or Pompeu Fabra University (UPF).
CEA and UAB courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits. UPF elective courses meet for 32-45 contact hours/2-3 credits. Overall, you may earn 12-15 credits (up to 225 contact hours) over the semester and 24-30 credits (up to 450 contact hours) over the academic year.
Typically, core and elective courses meet twice per week, Monday-Thursday. Courses at UPF typically meet 2-3 times per week while courses at UAB typically meet twice per week. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.
Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses and take an online language placement exam. If you choose to take electives at UPF in Spanish, you’ll take a language placement exam at UPF during orientation week. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. If you choose to take a Spanish language or elective course, to ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home university pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Spain. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
The following courses have been confirmed for this term. Please note, the host institution reserves the right to cancel or change courses without prior notification.
