Offered through our partner, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, you’ll take courses alongside local and other international students where you’ll actively participate in learning through hands-on activities, seminars and projects. Pompeu Fabra University’s six central Barcelona campuses offer a range of courses on the trimester system. Classes are taught in English and Spanish; choose to take courses with Spaniards for a truly integrated experience.
Located on the Plaza Catalunya in the heart of the city, the CEA Barcelona Center offers courses in a range of subjects, taught in English and Spanish. Learning takes place both in and out of the classroom, with instructors taking full advantage of Barcelona’s many notable sites and attractions.

When you study abroad in Barcelona, you can choose CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.

Please note that housing is not included in Virtual Internship programs.

Program Structure

Enroll in 1-2 CEA elective courses, 2-3 UPF elective courses, and 0-1 UPF language course. You also have the option to enroll in up to 2 CEA virtual courses.

CEA and UPF elective courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits. UPF language courses meet for 90 contact hours/6 credits; . You may also choose to enroll in the Global Career Development Seminar course, which meets for 15 contact hours/1 credit. You may earn a total of 12-16 credits (up to 240 contact hours) for the semester.

Typically, CEA elective classes meet twice per week, Monday-Thursday. UPF elective courses may meet 2-3 times per week, Monday-Thursday. UPF language courses meet daily, Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.

CEA virtual courses are taught in English using an online Learning Management System. You are expected to be an active participant in online forums, in addition to completing your regular readings, videos and homework. You can expect a blend of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (at your own pace) learning approaches that provide individual attention and flexibility for your learning style. Engaging in your “own way” gives you an opportunity to showcase your engagement in any topic or assignment while being part of an online global learning community.

Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses and take an online language placement exam. If you choose to take a UPF language course, you'll take a language placement exam at UPF during orientation week. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home university pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Spain. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
