About the Program

Program Description

How does modern society balance environmental preservation and ethics with competing forces like immigration, urbanization, and growth? By combining theoretical concepts and practical case studies, this program allows you to engage with topical global issues and gain insight into environmental and business ethics, interactions between human and ecological systems, consequences of urbanization, values of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural societies, and why people plant new roots in a different country. Enhance your understanding of lessons learned in the classroom with visits to entrepreneurs, refugee organizations, eco-sites, and local businesses, and take an Italian language course to facilitate your engagement with local culture.

Program Structure

Students with no previous knowledge of Italian language enroll in 1 CEA language course and choose 1-3 CEA core courses, 0-3 CEA optional electives, and 0-2 optional electives at our partner, the Providence College Center for Theology & Religious Studies (PC). Students at the high-beginning and above Italian language level enroll in 1-3 CEA core courses and choose 0-3 CEA elective courses and 0-2 PC elective courses.

CEA language courses meet for 60 contact hours/4 credits. CEA core courses, CEA elective courses, and PC elective courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits.

You may earn 12-16 credits (up to 240 contact hours). CEA classes meet 1-4 times per week, Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled on Friday.

Prior to departure, you'll select your preferred courses and indicate your estimated Italian language level. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. After you arrive in Rome, you'll take a language placement exam to determine final placement. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availability. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Italy. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Where You'll Study

Courses at the CEA Rome Center allow you to explore and experience all that the Eternal City has to offer. Courses are taught in English and take full advantage of Roman history and culture, with a focus on active learning outside the classroom. Courses in all levels of Italian are available. The CEA Rome Center is in the vibrant Prati neighborhood, within walking distance of Vatican City, Castel Sant’Angelo, and other UNESCO World Heritage sites. This central location makes it easy to visit galleries, museums, art studios, local businesses, historic sites, food markets, and more—all designed to bring lessons taught in the classroom to life.

Where You'll Stay

When you study abroad in Rome, you can choose standard CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.
