Program Structure
UNSW operates on a 1+3 model. In the first 4-weeks of the semester you'll take an intensive course, specifically designed for study abroad students. Then you'll continue the semester by taking 3 UNSW courses from the full catalog of courses. Courses are offered in a broad range of disciplines, with particular academic strengths in STEM, computer science, business, language and linguistics, social justice, policy, and governance.
UNSW utilizes credit points and represent a measure of the student’s workload by subject. Most subjects at UTS are 6 credit points each, which equals 4 credits in the U.S. semester system. Academic class contact hours range depending on the course but are typically 4-5 hours/class per week (depending on structure) and another four hours for work outside of classroom. You may earn 16 credits per semester.
Due to differences in the Australian higher education system, there is no standard for the number of days a week a UNSW course may meet. Class meeting times vary across departments and subject areas.

You will have access to introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in a wide range of courses in the fields of engineering, information technology, creative intelligence and innovation, the sciences, and much more. Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Navigating the University of New South Wales Website for Courses
Click here to access UNSW's handbook for a full list of courses with details. It includes important information and comprehensive details about course content and structure, subject and elective choices, attendance patterns, and credit-point requirements.
- You may search for courses by area of interest, faculty or subject area from that main page. We recommend using the “Advanced Search” feature (below the main search box), which allows you to additionally narrow your course search by specific term. UNSW provides the following resource to help navigate UNSW's handbook.
- You will take classes either in Term 1, which occurs in the first half of the year (US spring semester, mid-February to mid-May) or Term 3, which occurs in the latter part of the year (US fall semester, early September to early December). In addition to the three UNSW semester courses, you will enroll in an UNSW intensive course prior to the start of the semester. The list of intensive courses for is available here for the spring semester and here for the fall semester.
- Make sure you choose courses offered at UNSW's Kensington (Sydney) campus. Some of the Art courses are offered at the Paddington Campus, which is a short distance from the Kensington campus.
- Courses with a "Z" prefix are taught at the UNSW Canberra campus, and as such unavailable to you.
- Some courses may have pre-requisites requiring students to have already completed specific courses or equivalents at a lower level. Study abroad students are not expected to have taken the specific pre-requisite requirement but must have studied a relevant or similar course/module in your home country/institution. Students need to take academic experience into account when making course choices.
- Some courses may have co-requisites, which means that the course and the co-requisite must be taken at the same time. If no pre-requisites or co-requisites are specified, then courses should be open to all students.
- At UNSW, courses are validated at a level corresponding to a particular year of study. The levels are as follows:
- L1 (Level 1), which is equivalent to the 1st year of an undergraduate degree (similar to 100 level, introductory level)
- L2 (Level 2) which is equivalent to the 2nd year of an undergraduate degree (similar to 200 level, prior knowledge is required)
- L3 (Level 3) which is equivalent to the 3rd year of an undergraduate degree (similar to 300 level, advanced level)
Excursions
Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs*. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You'll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we've offered in the past.
