Human migration involves the movement of people from one place to another. It is an intrinsically geographical process. This course is based upon answering four big questions in relation to migration ? what it is, why people do it, who does it and why should we care about it. In particular, we will examine the relationship between globalization and international migration, considering the role that economic forces play in the decision to move. The course also examines the role of the nation-state in regulating migration and migrants, and in managing and policing borders. Following this, the course focuses on migrant identities the relationship between mobility and belonging. Equipped with this information, we will then turn to a critical analysis of the contemporary backlash towards international mobility, evident in anti-immigrant populism and nativism.
