DESCRIPTION

This course will guide students on how to use a camera as a tool for cross-cultural understanding, artistic expression, and self-discovery in a foreign environment. After being introduced to the fundamentals of film and digital photography, students will take photographs around their host city and attempt to capture their personal experience and the richness of local culture, including its people, architecture, and history. As they develop their technical, compositional, and critical skills, students will create a portfolio of images to showcase and celebrate their unforgettable study abroad experience.

Practical and theoretical skills will be covered in in-class workshops, outdoor shooting at specific sites and guided visits to photo exhibits.

Class time will consist of technical work, slide lectures, short film screenings, and critiques of works in progress. During the course, the instructor will review the work of students and, at the same time, students will analyze and evaluate their own work and that of their peers in a collaborative atmosphere of constructive reflection and criticism.

Students may choose between working with digital or traditional photography, although they should be aware that working with film will require additional effort from their part. They can use any digital photographic device such as a camera (DSLR, mirrorless, or compact) or a phone. Devices must have with a resolution of at least 8 megapixels and full manual controls.
