DESCRIPTION

This course offers an in-depth exploration of Japan's transformation from the late-Tokugawa period to the present, tracing pivotal moments such as the Meiji Restoration, postwar economic growth, and ongoing demographic change. Students will investigate contemporary social issues in education, employment, migration and immigration, public health, and minoritized experiences through lectures, readings, and field studies. Emphasizing critical analysis, the course examines how Japan?s political, economic, social and cultural institutions, including bureaucracy, media, civil society, family and business shape social change. Students will critically engage with online content to challenge prevailing stereotypes and assumptions about Japanese society and culture, develop original research-based arguments, and draw on diverse sources and in-country experiences (including west Tokyo and rural Japan) to analyze exciting topics.
