DESCRIPTION
Sports hold a central role in Irish history and the development of Irish culture and identity. Hurling, one of the Ireland's national sports, has been played for more than 3,000 years with the first literary reference dating back to 1272. Sport in Ireland is tied to English colonization and imperialism. Sport acted as a form of social glue and a site for political activism, thus sport cannot be detached from the political realm and Ireland's fight for independence.
In this course, students develop an understanding of sports in Irish culture, their historical context, and their importance in contemporary Irish society. They consider sport as a reflection of early twentieth century Ireland through to a reflection of diverse and multicultural modern Ireland. Sports have been geographically bound and a signifier of one's identity in Ireland in terms of one's village, townland and county, and students will consider the possible effects of urbanization on sports and one's identity. Students delve into a wide variety of subjects such as social structures, education, volunteerism, gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, amateurism and professionalism, globalization, corporatization of sports. They analyze the current state of integrity in sports, including drugs in sports, the influence of gambling on results, gene manipulation, and biomedical enhancements.
