DESCRIPTION
This module establishes a common understanding of elements of poetic discourse. Students will also be asked to analyse a selection of poetry and will be introduced to the basic terminology of poetic analysis. The unit will depend to a large extent on the material contained in weekly hand-outs and in the two core reading texts. Sessions are structured around a discussion of the formal aspects of poetry and include the following: verse form; diction, rhythm and meter; metaphor. The module also focuses on the skills required to write about the selection of poetry studied.
