DESCRIPTION

This course is a journey that begins in the ancient world and takes in the City's Roman amphitheater, the rise of religious drama in the streets of Britain's cities, the dangerous age of Marlowe and Shakespeare, the true-crime inspired Melodrama, Musical Theatre and the battle for the idea of modernity. This course places students at the heart of the experience of theatre in the UK. Students learn the essential qualities, conditions and boundaries of a play and consider limits of what the theatre can represent in terms of subject matter as well as how audiences are engaged, stimulated and provoked and how this has changed over time.

The course is cross-listed as THDA310.
