DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to develop students' media literacy and media production skills through critical and practical engagement with contemporary media forms. In the twenty-first century, media - particularly video media - permeates everyday life. The primary modes of news, communication, and entertainment have increasingly shifted from large public screens such as cinemas and televisions to personal, handheld platforms including social media, short-form content, and online video.
This course examines how media operates culturally to shape and reinforce identities, notions of self, and social values at both national and international levels. Students will explore how media disseminates information, constructs meaning, and influences public discourse. Alongside this critical inquiry, the course asks students to actively produce their own media as a means of engaging with the theoretical foundations of media studies and the practical realities of contemporary media creation. Media production is treated not as a specialist skill, but as a central literacy increasingly relevant across a wide range of employment contexts.
Classes will combine discussion of media theory with practical exploration of media production techniques. These will include sound and image, juxtaposition, framing, performance, recording, and editing. Students will respond to set academic and creative texts, as well as critically reflect on media drawn from their own everyday experiences. Excursions throughout Sydney will form an additional component of the course, providing opportunities to observe, analyse, and engage with media in diverse real-world contexts.
