DESCRIPTION

This course familiarizes students with contemporary theories and methods of understanding and applying ethical and theological conceptions of war and peace, violence and nonviolence. The course exposes students to three Occidental traditions on war, peace and violence: Realpolitik (political realism); Just War, and Pacifism. The contents of the course cover important contributions to understanding war, peace, and violence by such writers as Kant, Tolstoy, William James, Bertrand Russell, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Hannah Arendt, the Dalai Lama, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as contemporary thinkers. The course contrasts and assesses the respective advantages and disadvantages of conventional and more unconventional approaches to the analysis and amelioration of the form of political violence called war, as well as to the violence-free states of existence denoted by the word peace requiring students to apply what they learn in the historical and theoretical sections of the course to current events and global crises.
