DESCRIPTION

An analysis of the role and the impact of international regimes in international relations today. The origins, objectives, membership, rules, accomplishments of international organizations, such as UN, EU, IMF, World Bank, GATT, UNCTAD, OPEC. International governmental and nongovernmental cooperation and organizations. This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of conceptualization and practice of International organizations with special attention to the dynamics of formal and informal institutions. Students will learn the main historical developments of the contemporary global governance system in international affairs as well as basic characterization and categorization of international organizations. Special attention will be paid to the formation, role, functions, operations and effectiveness of international governmental organizations existing and operating on the global scale with various focus areas (UN, OPEC, WTO?), and to the issue of regionalism and international governmental organizations functioning on the regional level (EU, NATO, ECOWAS, MERCOSUR, SCO, ?). Various forms of international non-governmental cooperation will also be considered in great detail (private security associations, NGOs, BINGOs, ?). The course will equip students with the foundations and tools necessary to understand, analyze and critically assess contemporary problems related to the existence and operations of international organizations. Not only does the contents of this course have solid theoretical underpinnings, it also has a considerably strong practical dimension, as individual theoretical concepts and categories will be applied to numerous cases studies with the aim to deepen understanding of the students, critically analyze and assess potential effectiveness of various forms of organized international cooperation, and practice how mutual values and common interests often clash with national interests of individual sovereign states in decision-making and policy-making processes of various international organizations (most notably, the UN in the form of modeling the negotiations on the soil of the UN as part of the MUNYP initiative).
