DESCRIPTION
Language is the keystone of human culture. The study of language is therefore of intrinsic value, particularly for those interested in linguistics, history, literature, and cultural studies. The English language has evolved dramatically over the course of a thousand years, influenced both by historical events and language-internal processes. This course introduces students to this rich history, with a focus on linguistic change, contact, and development, alongside the social and cultural transformations that accompanied these shifts. Beginning with the origins and early developments of English, the course traces its evolution through Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and Modern English. Students will engage with both technical aspects of the language, such as phonology, morphology, and syntax, and broader literary and cultural contexts, developing a comprehensive understanding of the diachronic development of English.
