DESCRIPTION
The modernist movement rose in response to the social, political, and technological changes from the turn of the 20th century and has been closely linked to the development of global metropolises and the emergence of urban imagination. In this class, we will analyze how cities have given rise to key aesthetic dispositions, acts of linguistic and cultural translation, topographic conceptualizations, and global imaginaries. Together, we experience the city in art; the interplay of the urban landscape and memory; the form of the literary city and its responsiveness to cultural change; dystopian, nocturnal, pastoral, and sublime cities; the loneliness within the crowd, the changing status of women and men, and the demons and living dead creatures wandering the streets in the middle of the night. Most of the novels, short stories, and poems are set in the heyday of modernist movements; however, we will also focus on the howl of the city in the second half of the 20th century and the utopian city somewhere in our far/near future. Just as the modernist movement is highly interdisciplinary, attention will also be paid to visual arts, photography, and film.
