DESCRIPTION
This course introduces students to the cultural history of modern Rome. Along with analyzing key historical events, it explores the complex and layered cultural identity of the Eternal City.
The course is organized along chronological and thematic lines. Chronologically, it documents the developments and main turning points in the modern history of Rome. Thematically, it investigates fundamental aspects and contexts that have shaped the character of the city over time, including the myth of the ancient caput mundi once ruling over a vast empire, the presence of the Catholic papacy, the historical traces and artistic heritage of over two millennia.
To gain a fuller understanding of how such factors are still at the core of modern Roman society, students will also address political and socio-economic questions, as well as recent phenomena such as immigration and mass-tourism. In addition, they will examine lines of continuity and discontinuity with the cultural patterns of other Italian, European, and global cities.
