DESCRIPTION
During the nineteenth century the realist novel had become the dominant form for depicting an evolving society and its mores. As the twentieth century dawned, would-be novelists began questioning the codes of realism and experimented with new techniques to explore more authentic versions of individual and social experience. The European novel in the twentieth century casts doubt on traditional elements of the novel form: an eventful plot and stories of dramatic adventure, the heroic protagonist, an omniscient reliable narrator, a purely rational approach to human psychology, and the capacity of language to capture the real. In this course, we will consider the evolution of the novel looking at some of the major social, philosophical and literary developments of the twentieth century: from point of view, verisimilitude and "impressionist" thought through existentialism and its aftermath to the open-ended approach as the reader becomes the subject of the author's work.
