DESCRIPTION

Sound has become an indivisible part of art. Contemporary art works with various forms of media, commenting on the current socio-political state while bringing attention to its problems, uncovering taboos, and breaking down stereotypes. In this course we will try out the principles of experimental art from the 1960's up until today, examining such categories as sound art, field recordings, environmental art, documentation, performance, sound intervention, installation and video. Students will be confronted with artistic practice while getting to know the theory of contemporary art from curators, attending exhibitions, and working on a collaborative group project. For the second half of the semester (after the mid-term break), this course will meet at the contemporary art center MeetFactory, in Smichov, Prague 5, one of Prague's most vibrant spaces for contemporary art, hosting galleries, a theatre, music hall and 15 artistic studios. The students will therefore have a unique access to the artistic life of Prague. The course will conclude with an exhibition opening in the studio space at MeetFactory, which will be open to friends & the public on the final day of the class. The course is led by two established visual artists, Jana Babincová and Daniel Vlcek.
