DESCRIPTION

During this introductory course we will study theories* of cultural difference and explore the socio-cultural, often potentially hazardous, consequences of contact between workers in a globalised work environment. Themes covered will include: Ethnocentrism, monoculturalism and muticulturalism. The term "ethnocentric" according to Bennett (1993) is defined in the simplest possible way as assuming that the worldview of one's own culture is central to all reality. Students will be asked to analyse several case studies which focus on the perils of ethnocentrism in the corporation and explore how one might remedy the collateral damage (both material and otherwise) caused by it.
