DESCRIPTION

This course examines the origins, dynamics, and impact of social movements through the lenses of sociology, communication, and cultural studies. Students will explore the motivations behind collective action and how movements challenge dominant narratives to create alternatives within society. Topics include organizational forms, mobilization strategies, and issues driving activism - such as discrimination, economic inequality, environmental crises, immigration, and political polarization.

The course analyzes how civil organizations, unions, NGOs, and political parties amplify voices and frame discourse to influence social change. Case studies range from global movements like Civil Rights and environmental activism to contemporary examples in Spain and the U.S. Barcelona serves as a key reference point, having hosted major demonstrations from feminist marches to the Indignados movement and Catalan self-determination rallies. Through historical and contemporary perspectives, students will develop critical thinking and analytical skills to understand activism as a transformative force in modern societies.
