DESCRIPTION
Photography is everywhere: we record, share, and consume images constantly. But the speed of image-making can flatten our perspective into trends and clichés. This course slows photography down (technically, conceptually, and ethically) so students can develop a personal visual language while using the city of Madrid as a laboratory.
Over the term, we will learn essential photographic tools (exposure, focus, composition, light, color/black-and-white decisions, basic editing and sequencing) and practice reading images (context, symbolism, narrative, ethics, and visual culture). Madrid becomes our classroom: streets, parks, transport nodes, markets, photography studios, museums and cultural institutions.
Field trips (during regular class time) will include museums and photography exhibitions/galleries (TBC) and may align with major photography programs in the city such as PHotoESPAÑA. All activities support a final personal photo project related to Madrid, a cohesive body of work edited and presented at the end of the course.
