DESCRIPTION
This elective course provides an overview of the concept of hegemony. While one of the most used terms, especially in the last decade, the concept itself has a complex and long history. How we define hegemony and how others define hegemony changes how we can perceive international relations and changes to the global order. We will cover different origins of hegemony before returning to the present to examine contemporary hegemonic challengers. We will not just focus on the usual suspects, such as the US and China, but we will also explore non-state actors, such as social movements. We will also discuss how the concept of hegemony can be used as a tool in research. Ultimately, the seminar aims to help us think critically about our own positions regarding the changing global order.
