DESCRIPTION
This course introduces graphic design as a discipline of visual communication, where meaning is constructed through the deliberate arrangement of text, image, and structure. Rather than focusing on style or decoration, it frames design as problem-solving: how visual decisions shape understanding, influence interpretation, and guide attention.
Students will learn to observe, analyze, and construct visual messages through research, experimentation, iteration, and critique. The course emphasizes thinking through making-developing ideas through sketching, testing, and refinement rather than arriving at immediate solutions.
Across structured assignments, students will engage with core areas of graphic design practice including hierarchy, composition, typography, image-making, and systems thinking. Each project focuses on a specific aspect of communication design | while building an understanding of how visual language operates across print and digital contexts.
The course is designed for students from a range of academic backgrounds, including fine art and non-design disciplines. No prior experience is required. Students are encouraged to bring their own perspectives and develop a critical understanding of visual communication in everyday life.
By the end of the course, students will have developed practical skills and analytical frameworks to create intentional, structured, and context-aware visual work.
