DESCRIPTION

This course explores the cultural history of British theatre from 1945 to the present day via a series of practical encounters with the key dramatic texts. Each class will involve studying a play, then proceeding to rehearse scenes from the work in order to understand the play's impact as a work of theatre. The work of 10 playwrights from the period will be studied, with close attention paid to the changing style of performance, from the 'kitchen sink' form of British Realism to political theatre, the 'In Yer Face' movement of the 1990s and recent works that attempt to dramatize scientific and philosophical concepts. Students will explore the modern British canon and understand the constantly shifting dialogue between the drama of the United Kingdom and its American counterpart. In the final class, students will perform selected scenes for an invited audience in CEA CAPA's studio: The Street. Study will be supported by 2 visits to relevant plays and a guest speaker, usually a working writer, actor or theatre director.

The course is cross-listed with THDA328.
