DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this module is to analyze the challenges and opportunities that multiculturalism has generated in Ireland over the past two decades. This will be done through an in-depth study of the various theories of integration as well as of the issues arising, such as cultural diversity, racism and policy-making. Close attention will be paid to particular groups, such as travelers, Eastern European migrants and asylum seekers. Students are expected to attend lectures/seminars and to pursue substantial independent reading and research. Experiences of migration in other contexts (e.g. France, Germany, Spain) will also be looked at in order to draw comparisons between the different models of integration adopted by such countries.
