DESCRIPTION
The course introduces French poetry of the modern era, starting with the close study of a number of verse and prose poems by Charles Baudelaire. Consideration will also be given to the works of poets such as Rimbaud, Verlaine and Laforgue, with a particular focus on the formal investigations and experimentation which characterise verse from this period. Other axes of investigation include: theories of aesthetics and poetics such as voyance and synesthésie, the role of the poet in society and the evolution of vers libre. The course lays the foundations for an informed study of early 20th-century and contemporary poetry.
