DESCRIPTION

For almost eight hundred years (711-1492) Christians, Muslims, and Jews lived side by side in Spain. Their interaction contributed to the formation of a highly developed society with no parallels in Western Europe. During periods of peaceful coexistence, the three religions generated outstanding models of social, political, and artistic interaction. However, religious intolerance generated persecution and the final expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Iberia at the beginning of our era. Today, the three faiths coexist again in Spanish soil. However, this coexistence is not always easy due to religious fundamentalism.

This course explores the coexistence (Convivencia) of Christians, Muslims, and Jews in Spain during the Middle Ages and modern times, equally contemplating the achievements and failures generated by this coexistence. The course combines religious studies, Spanish history, art history, literary criticism, sociology, and anthropology to present a clear image of the interaction between faiths and cultures in crucial periods of Spanish and European history.
