DESCRIPTION

This course analyzes the role of Sports in Spanish culture and society, focusing on its current reality and language use. Through a multidisciplinary approach, it explores professional and non-professional practice, the passive enjoyment of sports and the influence of the media, its impact on social groups, as well as medical, political and socioeconomic factors. One of the main goals will be to understand the norms and rules established for major and traditional sports, from football and basketball to the particular instances of Basque 'Pelota' or Canary Islands Wrestling.

The language of sport will also be studied in this course. It will be necessary to become prepared to participate. Grammatical issues will be secondary here, leaving the foreground to vocabulary and language in use. All levels of Spanish fluency are acceptable for this course.
