DESCRIPTION
From an anthropological point of view, students will study the evolution of Flamenco from its origin to its impact on Spanish society today, including economic, social, political, ideological, and cultural issues. Flamenco has become the most important musical-cultural phenomenon in Spain. The course will look at the history of Flamenco and what it reveals about its originators and followers. It will cover Flamenco as a form of art, music and dance. Overall, students will gain an understanding of what influences this phenomenon has played on past and present generations. At certain points during the course, complementary practical sessions will be held, based on the commentary of historical documents, so as to reinforce the mainstream theoretical explanations.
